Modern Lighting
Installing modern lighting is one of the most dramatic changes you can make in your home.
However, it is perhaps one of the most overlooked aspects of remodeling. It may seem small, but you can change the entire mood and presence of your home simply by changing the light.
A simple lamp in a dark corner makes a room feel larger. Illuminating a work of art with track lighting creates drama and intrigue in a room.
One thing to consider when deciding on lighting is how much natural light you have in your home. If you live in a wooded area or a small home with few windows, you probably give more thought to the lighting in your house than someone who lives in a home with large floor to ceiling windows.
Lighting sets the mood and controls the atmosphere in your home. The trick is to find the balance between practicality and personality.
The kitchen, for instance, needs to have bright lighting for countertops and work areas, perhaps from recess lights above the counters, and a bathroom should have plenty of bright, clean light near the mirror so that you can easily see to put on makeup or style your hair.
Bedrooms and living areas aren’t as task-oriented and more ambient lighting should be used to create an atmosphere of relaxation and rest. Lamps and uplights are well suited for these rooms.
There are, in general, three types of lighting.
1. Ambient Lighting - This is soft lighting that has the effects of natural lights. It is much softer than light from a halogen bulb. Lamps and wall lights create this type of ambiance in a room.
2. Accent Lighting - This is exactly as says -- lighting that is used to accentuate certain areas and items. This is not for practicality. It is simply used to highlight certain features in a room, such as artwork or fireplaces.
3. Task Lighting - Again, self-explanatory. This is lighting that illuminates work areas, such as countertops and desks and is usually bright and focused.
